The recent past has seen the National Assembly in Tanzania lose several prominent legislators through death occurrences while two other MPs have suffered serious injuries in motor accidents.
The Minister of State in the Prime Minister`s Office, Juma Akukweti, died early last year in a plane crash that occurred in Mbeya.
Thereafter, the fourth phase government was soon to lose deputy minister in the ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children, Salome Mbatia, when Nissan a Patrol she was travelling in was involved in a head on collision with a lorry along the Makambako-Njombe highway in Iringa Region. Mbatia died on the spot.
Youthful MP Amina Chifupa, who was spearheading a personal crusade against drug kingpins, and whose life had been threatened on several occasions, died of a sudden disease in April last year.
Early this year, Kiteto MP Benedicto Losurutia, who was suffering from a kidney ailment, also passed away.
Chacha Wangwe is the fifth Tanzanian parliamentarian to succumb to death within the past two years.
The deaths notwithstanding, two MPs have narrowly cheated death in tragic motor accidents.
In September last year, then Defense and National Service minister Prof. Juma Kapuya sustained a broken rib in a road accident after his car lost direction and rammed onto a bridge before overturning.
Another legislator, Mudhihir Mudhihir (Mchinga-CCM) had his right arm amputated after the car he was driving rolled over as he was avoiding a cyclist at Mnazi Mmoja in Lindi Region.
